YNP accepting comments on proposal to plow West Yellowstone to Old Faithful
I took a snowcoach ride into Yellowstone National Park two weekends ago. We left out of West Yellowstone and took in the sights all the way to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It was a great way to see the park’s wildlife and natural features in a comfortable setting.
I’ve also spent some time in the park this winter on my skis. A couple of friends and I went touring around Bunsen Peak out of Mammoth. We saw bison hunkered down in the snow and enjoyed the solitude of Yellowstone’s winter season. The sound of snowmachines along the roadway was present, but never a distraction.
However, some folks find snowcoach and snowmobile traffic on the park’s roadways overwhelming and feel the “pay-to-play” nature of winter travel in the park is too expensive. A snowcoach or snowmobile tour of the park can cost upwards of $100 or more.
A proposal to plow park roads from Mammoth to West Yellowstone to Old Faithful is up for comment. Plowing is cheaper than grooming for snowmachines and would open up a lot more terrain for cross-country skiers during the winter.
The Park Service is taking comments until March 30, 2010. You can comment online or read more about the Yellowstone’s Winter Use Plan here: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?parkId=111&projectId=29281
