Glacier National Park ranger Doug Follett featured in National Parks video

Here’s an interesting video profile produced by National Parks Magazine about Glacier National Park ranger Doug Follett. Follett, 84, has worked in Glacier for 50 years. He recalls the days when he’d attend powwows with Blackfeet Indians just outside the park’s boundaries, but insists he’s seen few changes in Glacier over the years.

Follett’s family moved to Whitefish from Ferie, British Columbia in 1927. Growing up, Follett spent his time exploring the great mountains surrounding his adopted home.

His career with the Park Service began in 1942, when he took a job fighting a blister rust pine infection in Glacier National Park by removing gooseberry bushes. He took on the role of park ranger in 1961 and has become an institution in Glacier over the years.

Our familyhas been fortunate to have camped at Glacier, and loved it's beauty, but unfortunately, never got to experience Ranger Doug.I hope that he will be publishing his poems and thoughts,so many of us can enjoy them too. He's right. Our parks are the most important places in our nation.Where else can we come to be still and get in touch with the most important parts of ourselves.Bernice Van Steenbergen
