All aboard! Riding through the Old west on the Charlie Russell Chew Choo

| June 30, 2010

The sharp gasp of a fellow passenger drew my attention moments before the blast of a shotgun broke the lonely sound of the prairie. I looked north through the window of the train as an armed bandit appeared over the rolling hills in the failing sunlight. He was riding hard, shotgun firm against his shoulder. [...]

Making sense of stoneflies: Annual salmonfly hatch keeps anglers guessing

| June 29, 2010

Early summer in Southwest Montana means one thing for dry fly anglers – stoneflies. Among the largest aquatic insects that reside in Montana waters, the annual emergence of the salmonfly and golden stonefly both captivate and befuddle anglers. It’s a season filled with limitless anticipation, occasionally epic days and often frustrating ones. The first of [...]

What do you think … grizzly or black bear in Yellowstone National Park?

| June 28, 2010

Here’s some video I shot last Tuesday on a return trip from Silver Gate in the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park. This bear was spotted across Soda Butte Creek near the confluence with Pebble Creek. The bear came out of the surrounding timber and was digging around in the soil in the meadow on [...]

Exploring the waterfalls of Silver Gate

| June 24, 2010

SILVER GATE – Set just out of view of Highway 212 and a stone’s throw from the border of Yellowstone National Park, Silver Falls tumbles for more than 100 feet from a limestone cliff into a rocky ravine. About a mile away on the far side of Soda Butte Creek, Bridal Falls spews forth from [...]

The Gallatin National Forest named Cavan Fitzsimmons its new district ranger for the Hebgen Lake Ranger District on Wednesday. Fitzsimmons replaces Lauren Turner who retired from the Hebgen Lake Ranger District – located in West Yellowstone – last month. Fitzsimmons and his family will make the move to West Yellowstone from the Kawishiwi Ranger District [...]

Welcome to Montana, we got it good

| June 21, 2010

Last Saturday I went fishing along the Madison River in Bear Trap Canyon with three rookie fly fishermen. We camped out Friday night at Trapper Springs Recreation Area and had hopes of landing a few trout on salmonflies the following day. Of course we stayed up too late drinking and laughing and watching the stars. [...]

Salmonfly watch: Part deux

| June 15, 2010

I spoke today with Roger Oettli of Great Divide Outfitters on the Big Hole River. Oettli said the first reports of salmonflies on the Big Hole came in yesterday with anglers spotting the big bugs on the banks near Brownes Bridge on the river’s lower stretch near Glen. “The water has been dropping since June [...]

National Forest Service to combine Big Timber and Livingston Ranger Districts

| June 15, 2010

In an effort to reduce costs and manage its budget, the National Forest Service announced the combination of the Big Timber and Livingston Ranger Districts on Tuesday. The two districts will form the new Yellowstone Ranger District. “Like many Americans, the Gallatin National Forest is tightening our financial belt to live within our means,” the [...]

Salmonflies spotted on Lower Madison

| June 14, 2010

I just took a run out the Lower Madison this morning. The water is high and off color, which is to be expected this time of year. Flows out of Ennis Lake topped out at 5,500 cubic feet per second on Saturday. They have since dipped to 2,800cfs earlier this morning. There weren’t many anglers [...]
