Salmonfly watch: Part deux

SalmonflyI spoke today with Roger Oettli of Great Divide Outfitters on the Big Hole River. Oettli said the first reports of salmonflies on the Big Hole came in yesterday with anglers spotting the big bugs on the banks near Brownes Bridge on the river’s lower stretch near Glen.

“The water has been dropping since June 7,” Oettli said. “We are starting to see the salmonflies. When they hit Dewey Canyon it is some of the best fly fishing you can imagine.”

Oettli said folks in the Big Hole Valley were very concerned about water in April, but that spring snow and cool weather in May has helped out the snowpack. He said the river has likely peaked out for the season and that flows will likely drop gradually through June, which sould be a boon for anglers.

Oettli said the salmonfly hatch typically moves upstream about four to five miles a day on the Big Hole. He said golden stoneflies should follow the salmonfly hatch in about a week.

“The fishermen are excited,” Oettli said about the salmonfly sightings. “To see the fish come up and hit a size 4 or 6 dry fly, it just kicks people up.”
