What do you think … grizzly or black bear in Yellowstone National Park?

Here’s some video I shot last Tuesday on a return trip from Silver Gate in the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park. This bear was spotted across Soda Butte Creek near the confluence with Pebble Creek. The bear came out of the surrounding timber and was digging around in the soil in the meadow on the far side of the creek.

I figure he was digging up some type of tasty root or perhaps some type of bug … kind of hard to tell.

Unfortunately (and all too commonly in Yellowstone) the bear sighting elicited some entirely irresponsible behavior on the part of park tourists. Aside from parking his car in the middle of the road, I witnessed one gentleman bolt clear across the field toward the bear full speed, camera in hand, before reaching the turbid waters of Soda Butte Creek. I half expected him to dive in in an attempt to get closer to the bear, but it was not to be.

Whatever he was occupied with must have been entirely consuming because the bear didn’t bat an eye. After a few moments he took off into the woods and the bear jam subsided.

Some of the tourists watching from the roadside said the bear was a grizzly, but I have my doubts. For one thing, it doesn’t have the distinctive hump of a grizzly. I also think its elongated snout makes it look more like a black bear.

What do you think?

Is this a grizzly bear or black bear?
