FWP reporting increased hunters, elk harvest in southwest Montana

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks is reporting increased elk harvest compared to 2009 over the first few days of the general big game season in southwest Montana. FWP also reported that mule deer harvest is steady and white-tailed deer harvest is down as compared to 2009.

According to FWP, 3,173 hunters passed through seven game check stations on opening weekend. Those hunters harvested 178 elk, 30 mule deer and 7 white-tailed deer. That figures out to a 6.8 percent success rate for hunters on opening weekend.

The Silver City check station north of Helena had the largest number of elk reported, with hunters harvesting 45 animals. Silver City was also the busiest check station with 995 hunters.

Outside of Butte, the Divide check station saw 317 hunters who harvested 33 elk, six mule deer and one white-tailed deer. The Ruby check station near Alder had 34 elk pass through, twice as many as 2009. The Cameron check station south of Ennis had 28 elk checked compared to 35 in 2009.

FWP is reminding hunters to cut out the proper month and day of the kill from their licenses and attach them immediately after the kill. Hunters are required to leave evidence of sex and species before transporting any big game carcass of portion of a carcass.
